Barcelona and Montserrat

Barcelona 4th to 13th October, 2008
Barcelona is a major economic centre with one of Europe's principal Mediterranean ports, and Barcelona International Airport is the second largest in Spain. Founded as a Roman city, Barcelona became the capital of the Counts of Barcelona. After merging with the Kingdom of Aragon, it became one of the most important cities of the Crown of Aragon.
Sagarda Familia

Antonio Gaudí (1852-1926), throughout his life, studied nature's angles and curves and incorporated them into his designs. Instead of relying on geometric shapes, he mimicked the way men stand upright. The hyperboloids and paraboloids he borrowed from nature were easily reinforced by steel rods and allowed his designs to resemble elements from the environment.

The Sagrada Família ("Expiatory Temple of the Holy Family"), often simply called the Sagrada Família, is a massive Roman Catholic church under construction in Barcelona. Construction began in 1882 and continues to this day. The project is scheduled to be completed in 2026.

Every part of the design of La Sagrada Família is rich with Christian symbolism, as Gaudí intended the church to be the "last great sanctuary of Christendom".

The Church will have three grand façades: the Nativity façade to the East, the Glory façade to the South (yet to be completed) and the Passion façade to the West.

The tainted windows of the Church

The columns of the interior are a unique Gaudi design. Besides branching to support their load, their ever-changing surfaces are the result of the intersection of various geometric forms.

Sagarda Familia is like a huge forest. The main columns are buttressed
at the base as is the case in many trees in nature.
Park Güell
Park Güell is a garden complex with architectural elements situated
on the hill of el Carmel in the Gràcia district of Barcelona.
It was designed by the Catalan architect Antoni Gaudí and built
in the years 1900 to 1914. It is part of the UNESCO
World Heritage Site "Works of Antoni Gaudí".
The place is skillfully designed and composed to bring
the peace and calm that one would expect from a park.
The park was originally part of a commercially unsuccessful housing site, the idea of Count Eusebi Güell, whom the park was named after. It was inspired by the English garden city movement; hence the original English name Park.
Gaudi's structures echo natural forms, with columns like tree trunks
supporting branching vaulting under the roadway
The Park's high-point offers the most complete view of Barcelona and the bay. It is possible to view the main city in panorama, with the Sagrada Família
and the Montjuïc area visible at a distance.

La Rambla, Barcelona

La Rambla is an iconic and busy street in central Barcelona, popular with both tourists and locals alike. A 1.2 kilometer-long tree-lined pedestrian mall in the Barri Gòtic, it connects Plaça Catalunya in the center with the Christopher Columbus monument at Port Vell.
Spanish poet Federico García Lorca once said that La Rambla was
"the only street in the world which I wish would never end".
The name rambla means, in Catalan, but also in Spanish, an intermittent water flow, and is derived from the Arabic 'ramla' which means 'sandy riverbed'
